Heartburn

Many pregnant women experience a burning sensation in the throat and chest that occurs when the stomach contents move back up into the esophagus (the tube that moves food from the throat to the stomach).

This is known as heartburn — which, despite its name, has nothing to do with the heart — is a common pregnancy complaint.   This occurs because the hormone progesterone slows the emptying of the stomach. It also relaxes the valve at the entrance to the stomach so that it doesn’t close properly, allowing acidic stomach contents to move upward into the esophagus, a condition known as gastroesophageal reflux, or acid reflux. It can get worse later on in the pregnancy when the growing uterus presses upwards on the stomach.

To help minimize the discomfort of heartburn:

  • Steer clear of certain foods and drinks that may make it worse — citrus; spicy, fatty (especially fried or greasy) foods; caffeine; and carbonated drinks.
  • Eat several small meals throughout the day.
  • Take your time when eating.
  • Drink fluids between — not during — meals.
  • Avoid eating or drinking right before bedtime.
  • Resist the urge to lie down after meals.
  • Talk to your doctor about medications that can safely be taken for heartburn during pregnancy.

Earth

A new diaper service from the California Bay Area is producing compostable diapers. EARTH-BABY has developed a way to make leak-free, environmentally-friendly diapers made from corn-based plastic and wood pulp.

The used diapers are run through a high temperatures compost that kills e coli and 14 weeks later, the product breaks down into a top soil.

The service is currently only available in the following areas….

  • Atherton
  • Menlo Park
  • Palo Alto
  • East Palo Alto
  • Los Altos
  • Mountain View
  • Sunnyvale
  • Cupertino
  • Campbell
  • Los Gatos
  • Cambrian Park
  • Willow Glen

The EarthBaby company states “…we are committed to reducing the impact our children have on the environment by eliminating diapers and wipes from landfills.”

The monthly fee is $24.99 and includes delivery, pickup, and professional processing of the compostable diapering products.

A varied selection of diapers, allow you to choose different options as your baby’s needs change.  The cost for a 44 count diaper pack… $11.79!

Since the service is not yet available in many areas, you can still purchase the compostable diaper, and dispose of normally, however the process of biodegrading takes a little bit longer -vs- the 14 weeks, it would normally take if you had the service.  Still a far better alternative to the existing disposable diapers on the market today, which due to it’s plastic content,  take about 500 years to degrade!  Americans dump about 50million diapers into landfills EVERY DAY!

First Month of Pregnancy

Fertilization! The sperm and egg join in your fallopian tube to form a unique human being–that’s 46 combined chromosomes which pre-determine all of a person’s physical characteristics. Washed into your uterus, the developing embryo searches for a nice place to implant and is only one-sixth of an inch long, but growing quickly. The heart, no larger than a poppy seed, has been beating since day 18 when you’re just four days late for your menstrual period, and by 21 days it is pumping, through its own closed circulatory system, blood whose type is different from yours. Four weeks after fertilization the eye, ear and respiratory systems begin to form and thumbsucking has been photographed within the first month by scientists.

Did ya know?
The baby at the fetal stage savours it’s monther’s meals, first picking up the food tastes of a culture in the womb. And you wondered why you love spicy food so much! Continue reading

Welcome

Welcome to my little corner online.  I started this web site to group together all the valuable things I’ve come across online, during my pregnancy journey.  I had to visit at least 20-30 web sites to just find the answer to simple questions.

So, this site is a culmination of the past few months.  I am currently in my 2nd trimester, and still finding out new things every day!  I am extremely excited, but as this is my first time, extremely nervous.  So, you can imagine all of the questions I have.

In any event, grab a cup of decafinated tea, and put on that comfy sweater and sit back.  Let’s enjoy this journey together.

Oh, and remember, I’m always just an email away!
